10.5.2. The Process Viewer

The Process Viewer is included with the NT 4.0 Resource kit. It goes beyond simply allowing a user to kill a process, such as Task Manager would allow. Through the Process Viewer an administrator also can retrieve detailed information on the memory allocation of any active process, as shown in Figure 10.23.

Figure 10.23.  The Process Viewer shows memory allocation on a per-process basis.

10.6. Lab

This lab will aid you in your learning by testing you on the information presented in this chapter, as well as by giving you exercises to hone your skills. You will find answers to the review questions in Appendix B, “Answers to Review Questions.”

10.6.1. Review Questions

Question 1

How should you go about establishing a baseline of server and network performance?

A.  Use Network Monitor to capture network traffic periodically over several days.
B.  Use Performance Monitor to capture performance data on each of your servers during peak usage times during the day.
C.  Use Performance Monitor to capture performance data on each of your servers during nonpeak usage times during the day.
D.  Use Network Monitor to capture network traffic originating from your PDC every hour for several days and then average the numbers.

Question 2

You use the Chart view in Performance Monitor best to

A.  Obtain data to use as baseline information.
B.  Notify the System Administrator of resource limitations, such as available free disk space.
C.  View data in real time.
D.  Identify objects to monitor in greater detail.

Question 3

After configuring Performance Monitor to log physical disk utilization, you notice that the counters have remained at zero. What is the probable cause?

A.  The DISKPERF service was not loaded.
B.  There was no activity to monitor.
C.  There is no object called Physical Disk.
D.  You cannot monitor physical disk activity unless you also monitor page faults.

Question 4

True/False. To obtain information on the purpose of each counter, you should use the Explain button while selecting objects.

Question 5

You want to use the Chart view to monitor processor utilization on your multiprocessor system. How should you do this?

A.  Select the Processor object. All counters will be added automatically.
B.  Select the Processor object and the %Processor Time counter. A line will be placed on the chart for each processor.
C.  Select the Processor object and the %Processor Time counter. You also must select an instance for each processor.
D.  Select the Processor object and the %Processor Time counter for each processor.

Question 6

You notice that your system exhibits an excessive amount of hard disk activity and your %Processor Time is staying over 80%. What is the most likely cause?

A.  Excessive paging
B.  Heavy network usage
C.  Increased utilization of your SQL Server
D.  A lack of free disk space

Question 7

You want to gather information on the amount of traffic generated by your WINS server, and you do not want to capture any other frames. You should

A.  Capture all the frames, export them to Access, delete the frames in which you are not interested, and then import this information into Network Monitor for analysis.
B.  Capture all the frames and set a display filter to display only the information applicable to the WINS server.
C.  Capture all the frames and scroll through the data to find the frames in which you are interested.
D.  Set a capture filter to capture only the information from the WINS server.

Question 8

You want to set alerts on each of your four servers to notify you when free disk space falls below a certain threshold. You should

A.  Run Performance Monitor on each of the servers for an alert. Check each server periodically to see whether an alert has been generated.
B.  Configure an alert for each server through Performance Monitor running on your workstation.
C.  Run four instances of Performance Monitor on your workstation and tile them so you can see if any alerts are generated.
D.  Configure an alert for each server through Performance Monitor running on your workstation and enter your user name as a destination for the alert.

Question 9

The Task Manager can provide you with information on

A.  CPU utilization
B.  The amount of free disk space
C.  Memory utilization
D.  Which applications are running

Question 10

In order to determine how memory is allocated to processes, you should use

A.  Task Manager
B.  Process Viewer
C.  Network Monitor
D.  User Manager

10.6.2. Exercises

Exercise 10.1

Use Performance Monitor to configure an Alert on a remote computer monitoring free disk space. Have the Alert message sent to you on your workstation.

Exercise 10.2

Use Network Monitor to capture data on your network. Apply a display filter to show all broadcast traffic.

Exercise 10.3

Track your CPU utilization using the Task Manager while you work on several different applications.
